eazywayOct 27, 07:32 PMThey do build in obsolescence into the ipod as you can't replace the battery (easily). It does become a disposable item, although a pricey one at that. I do love the ipod (even though I don't own one) but this puts me off to the point where I just can't go through with actually buying one. My experience with rechargeable batteries in mobile phones and lap top isn't good.
Actually replacing the battery is a piece of cake with the tool. My kids all have a 3g version and I replaced all the batteries(4) Cost $26 each.
or send it in for replacement.

Malware, in relation to Linux, shows that the market share argument is a fallacy.
Linux dominantes the segment of the market share that includes high value server targets.
Controlling a large number of servers would be much more profitable than infecting a large number of home users.
For example, take control of a large number of servers and set up a web filter proxy on each server to modify the affiliate tags associated with advertising moving through the server to direct the profit of the advertising away from the sites hosting the ads to the individual that controls the server. With this type of attack, exploiting one server is the equivalent of exploiting every machine that passes data through that server.
More info here. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus#Possible%20reasons%20linux%20is%20less%20prone%20to%20malware) -> The root user vs normal usage counter argument also applies to Mac OS X.

~Shard~Sep 10, 10:22 AMGreat news that Kentsfield is coming early, however I am curious to see what Apple does with it (if anything). Since it is based on the Conroe chipset, and Apple has elected not to incorporate Conroe into any of the Mac line-up (yet), I wonder what Kentsfield's role will be (if any) in the Mac world.
Once again, all signs point towards that Conroe Mini-tower... ;) :D

Apple buys 5.3 billion in parts from Sammy then sue them for copying(allegedly) their design. Whatever man.

Rodimus PrimeApr 25, 02:15 AMIf a few people on MacRumors find me to be childish, I really couldn't care less. Believe me, what you guys think of me is not going to ruin my chances of getting into an Ivy League school, or from becoming a successful adult.
-Don
Hmm and my opinion of Ivy League schools goes down more.
Shows that many who go in and come out of there are unethical. Explains why so much wrong with the country because it is lead by the unethical people.
Like I said before I hope and pray you never get in position that requires ethics because clearly you have none and your parents fail to teach you any.
That and it looks like you come from family with out ethics.

ten-oak-druidApr 4, 12:36 PM"Shooting To Wound" is purely a product of television, movies, and video games. In real situations where gunfire is exchanged, milliseconds count, and center mass until the target is down is the ONLY reality.
I know. And heroics by gun toting civilians is mostly a product of fantasy as well. The idea of whipping your gun out to save the day is absurd. Most shootings occur with no warning. If you were always hyper-vigelent and ready to brandish your gun, you would likely be a danger to those around you.

LagunaSolApr 29, 04:03 PMYou do understand that 2008 minus 2001 plus development time is more than 1 or 2, right? That's 7, maybe 9 years of losses.
My original comment was that this is a poor way to do it, from a finance perspective. There was no guarantee, and if Sony and M$ didn't have profit elsewhere, these wouldn't even exist. Nintendo made money on the Wii almost immediately, as you've claimed M$ did. It sounds like you are talking about Nintendo.
And the beauty of this business model is Microsoft and Sony will start the bleeding all over again in a couple of years with the next console generation.

Prof.Mar 23, 04:59 PMAnd nothing could make me care as I remember the old saying "sticks and stones..." unlike our oversensitive posters. I am in no way in favor of irresponsible behavior or drunk driving, but making tasteless jokes is neither and harms nobody.
That's not the point, it's about having respect for those who are no longer with us.

FFTTSep 3, 08:01 PMTypically you get an upgrade and no price change. Sometimes the price even goes down.
-Matt
Apple may offer a choice of Core Duo 1 or Core Duo 2 as a BTO option.
Doing this might allow Apple to sell the Basic MacBooks and iMacs for less while
the Core Duo 2 models will be favored by those who can afford to spend a bit more.

bchrengMay 1, 01:23 AMCurious that everyone is clamoring for a thunderbolt-enabled machine, but there isn't a single thunderbolt drive available on the market.
I guess some people just need to feel like they have new stuff even if it's totally pointless.
Some people - like me - may not own a mac desktop yet and would like to purchase one soon and intend on using it for quite a while. So while there may be no devices at the moment, there could very well be such a device released next year or the year after. When it is released we'll be glad that our iMacs have the port. It's not exactly like a pc where we can open up the case and add in the port later on.

zap2Apr 11, 03:22 AMAll those monthly bills add up. I'm glad I never bought an iPhone, for example, when they first came out. I've saved a ton of money not buying the required data plan that goes comes with it. I don't want to put words in your mouth but it sounds like our priorities are all wrong and I agree.
I don't see what your point is...how does that respond to the person you quoted? He was saying people made bad choice due to keep oil and you say "I'm glad I didn't get an iPhone right away"
The price of gas living in suburbia is much more of a drain on a household then an extra 20 dollars for iPhone data. 20 bucks is nothing in a month of gas. And for the amount of usage iPhones often get(like in my case) it is well worth the money for many people.
Don't criticize people for making different choices then yourself

Tones2Mar 29, 12:25 PMOver FOUR YEARS, which is a major amount of time in this market, I think iOS, Andriod and Windows phones with all be pretty much the same. I think there's going to be a point where that not more more to do with hardware in terms of innovative features. The OS's themselves are really just shells for running apps anyway, and they will all do this fairly effectively in similar ways, a lot like OSX and Win7 are two good OS's. The key will be the app market, which Apple currently holds a huge lead, but in 4 years it would seem that Android and Windows will catch up in terms of IMPORTANT apps to run, so that will be levelized as well.
The iPhone will always have the crazy fanboys to their advantage but Android and Windows phones have the flexibility factor of an open platform where a number of manufacturers can make phones at different price points in different markets.
So in 4 years, I think all will have similar market shares, with iOS being at the bottom of the three just in terms of number of phones because of the closed platform syndrome, but not by much. However, the iPhone will be the most profitable of the three for the OS manufacturers since Apple also maks the hardware.
So let's call it a tie - everybody wins, including the consumer. Remember fanboys - competition and choice is a GOOD thing!

toddybodyMar 22, 03:21 PMHonestly, if it made any sense whatsoever then Apple wouldn't have killed it. Do the math. You're living in the past, kid.
As an ex-kid I take extreme offense to that statement. Besides, are you really going to tell me Apple makes sense all the time? I guarantee Apple made more money off the 24inch iMac than they did the MacPro for that period...now, with the introduction of the 27inch they wanted to diversify the iMac line more so...hence the 21.5.
My beef with your original statement stands (as its UBER subjective)...why is a 24inch screen "useless"? What if Apple came out with a 14inch MBP, and I said the 15inch was "useless". Uhhh, thats called an OPINION...look it up grand dad;)

Miles513Apr 4, 09:20 AMHaving been bitten numerous times by McAfee, I never believe their press releases.
Way back, I subscribed to their virus and firewall software. I tested the firewall, and it worked. Until they updated it to a slicker looking interface. Some sixth sense made me test it again, and bingo, my computer was exposed. McAfee customer "support" was not interested. They had my annual subscription, and that was all they wanted.
After ripping all McAfee code out of my PC, I was dismayed to find that my employer signed up for McAfee products.
Months and months of slow PC, followed by bricking thousands of employee PCs with their encryption-at-rest software.
co-sign, same thing happened to me
iMacZealotSep 17, 08:22 PMok.. see, i never said TECHNICALLY it was crap. OK, so CDMA can have higher speed than 3G GSM. ITS A MOBILE PHONE. what the hell do you need 14mbps for?
a jet car that goes 300mph on a drag strip is NOT better than a Audi/Merc/BMW/Bentley/etc that only does 250mph, but can drive on a normal road.
for consumers, it (CDMA) is crap. you are so used to having to choose a phone based on what your carrier supports (or vice-versa) that you can't see how that is a problem. GSM (which uses a SIM card) offers so much more flexibility. hell. I can take my phone to any country with a GSM network, put in a sim card, and VOILA i am connected (not that i need to worry anyway, with vodafone global roaming)
There are GSM carriers here that do that, too, you know. It's not all CDMA here.
