PeterKGApr 4, 12:52 PMVery sad. Someone lost their life over something so trivial. And sad that the guard has to live with knowing he took a life. :(

It is amazing just how many times this same stupid comment has been made in this thread. Why do people have to regurgitate the same thing over and over?

Why is is sad a criminal dies while firing at a guard. Why is it sad a person who knows the consequences of carrying a weapon while attempting to rob a store? You play with fire and get burned. Nothing sad about it.

Kudos for the guard for protecting himself. He can sleep at night knowing he is not instead DEAD.

MattSepetaApr 18, 04:00 PMThe very fact that employers think that employees "should" work even one minute more than what they are paid to is mind-boggling. Why should they "expect" that the employee will give his time willingly for no extra?

If they want the project manager to work past 5pm, they simply must pay. if they need him to come in on Saturday to work on that new addition to the project, they must pay. It would seem mighty pretentious of them to expect to not pay for work done.

If they want employees to work non-stop, PAY FOR IT. No one owes their employer a darn thing except exactly what is required in the job during the hours agreed upon.

See how that works?

edit: funny that the US is pretty much the ONLY developed country on earth where benefits are seen as egregious handouts if you are a typical rank and file worker. But, we're #1, right?

1. If you are on Salary, you contractually agreed to get the job done regardless of the typical "work week". If you don't want to work long hours, don't accept a salaried position.

2. I am just as whole-heartedly against forcing hourly employees to work unpaid overtime. That would be "theft" or "servitude". Totally different.

ChazUKApr 19, 10:38 AMBetween Samsung on the hardware and Google on the software, I can't believe anyone in their right mind actually saying with a straight face that the Samsung phone in question is not stealing from Apple. Get a grip.

The customisation of the Galaxy S has nothing to do with Google at all. This isn't stock Android and none of the Samsung UI elements are a part of the AOSP.

CNET reports (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20048486-37.html) that Microsoft has filed yet another document (PDF) (http://ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/ttabvue-91195582-OPP-26.pdf) in its case opposing Apple's application for a trademark on the term "App Store", moving beyond its earlier effort involving complaining about Apple's font size (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/09/microsofts-latest-legal-tactic-complaining-about-apples-font-size/) to bring in a linguist to counter Apple's own expert in debating the genericness of the term. The filing also points to Amazon's just-introduced Appstore for Android (http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b?ie=UTF8&node=2350149011) as yet another example of the term being generic. Apple noted (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/01/apple-defends-against-microsoft-in-app-store-trademark-dispute/) in a prior filing that it had moved to protect its trademark by reaching out to companies it believed was using the "App Store" name improperly, but Microsoft argues that the simple fact that those companies were using the term in the first place indicates that the term is generic.

That is great coming from a company who has Windows trade marked.
Cant they MS just call it the MSAPP Store or WinAPP store.

Do they really need to just call it the APP STORE?

Category: Apple Software
Link: Apple Faces Increasing Cyber Threats, McAfee Says (http://www.macbytes.com/link.php?sid=20101230092111)
Description:: McAfee Inc. expects Apples iPhone, geolocation services such as Foursquare, and mobile devices to be the target of malware attacks in 2011. The computer security company also predicts attackers targeting shortened URL services and internet TV platforms as well as a rise in politically motivated hacktivisim, as more groups are expected to repeat the WikiLeaks example.

Weve seen significant advancements in device and social network adoption, placing a bulls-eye on the platforms and services users are embracing the most. These platforms and services have become very popular in a short amount of time, and were already seeing a significant increase in vulnerabilities, attacks and data loss, said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs.

McAfee Labs Threat Predictions for 2011:

* Apple: No longer flying under the radar

McAfee said the popularity of iPads and iPhones, combined with the lack of user understanding of proper security for these devices, will increase the risk for data and identity exposure, and will make Apple botnets and Trojans a common occurrence.

Just another ploy to scare people into buying there over priced software.

I'm sure Apple takes security very very seriously. Is it me or is McAffee screaming wolf?

bpfesqMar 30, 12:39 PMIt goes to show you what our legal system really is like. Kind of goes to show you that much of our legal system is nothing more than expensive babies fighting. Also goes to show you why our government is such a mess because guess what most of our political leaders are........ You guessed it LAWYERS. This is pretty much a world wide thing.

Yeah, blame it on the lawyers.

Lawyers solve problems. Here, we have a dispute amongst the 2 businesses. The lawyers are just arguing the positions of their respective clients. Not sure why the lawyers deserve much, if any, of the blame.

People act like every lawyer is a ambulance chasing scumbag. Well, that is until they're wronged in some way and call their lawyer to help.

ezekielrage_99Aug 29, 06:51 AMI'm pretty sure the guy doesn't deserve to be shot down.

It seems to me that by "MB" he did not bean "MacBook" as is the most common use of these two letters, but "Mother Board" which makes perfect sense, covers all Yonah macs and is perfectly true. Disregarding the soldering issue of the 'books, which is a different point.

I'm a convert from the PC mob and whenever I see MB I automatically think of "Main Board" as well.

wywern209Apr 30, 05:21 PMYou are also stuck in current times. Physical media will be dead by then, everything is going to be cloud based, there will be no such thing as a physical copy of movies any more :)

tell that to the majority of the people in the world who struggle to stream a SD youtube video because internet speeds aren't up to snuff yet. we simply don't have the infrastructure for it yet.

vvswarupApr 29, 12:46 AMThat can be viewed another way. Apple is too cheap to bother risking anything that is not a sure bet.

MS willing to risk R&D and a lot of R&D on things that might be a dead end.
MS R&D is more like a university Research compared to Apple R&D that is only about profit.
Guess which one adds more better for the people. Correct answer is not Apple

Your remark reminds me of a conversation I had with my brother. He was talking about starting a business. Now, to preface my next statement, let me offer a little background. A while ago, I suggested to my brother that he invest in stocks and he was not ready to take on the risk of it, so he refused to invest. So, when he said he wanted to start a business, my response was something like: "So you don't want to invest in stocks because it's too risky but you don't mind starting a business."

His response was: "Stocks have no value to society. With this business that I start, I would be able to make something of value to society."

I did not respond to it then, but after thinking about that remark, my response should have been that if the intention is create a for-profit business, an activity to make money for oneself, the value that the product adds to society is irrelevant. Also, companies use the cash from stock investors to fund capital expenditures. So the argument can be made that stocks indirectly add value to society because companies use the cash from stock investors to make more things that people can consume.

Your left-handed remark about Apple R&D vs. MS R&D is baseless and irrelevant. MS is not a university. It's a business. Businesses exist to make money. Also, Bill Gates did not start MS out of some altruistic intention of doing good for people. He started it to make money. Same goes for Steve Jobs.

Don't blow smoke and make this more than it really is. You were replying to the OP who said that Microsoft doesn't seem to be getting its money's worth on R&D. Don't aggrandize it fact by saying that MS is "adding more better for society" and Apple is "only about profit." The OP is right. Microsoft is not getting its money's worth on its R&D expenditure. Something has to change.

MS is a public corporation. Its first duty is to its shareholders. If spending better on R&D in order to get more profit out of it will enhance shareholder value, then Microsoft has an obligation to do so.

Unlikely to happen except for maybe the Mac Pros. Apple wants you to get your media from iTunes.

iStudentUKApr 11, 03:41 AM55 miles per US gallon ;). Thats 70 miles per imperial gallon as US gallons are smaller.

Damn stupid unit systems! What is this, the dark ages?!

70 mpg (UK ones) is high, 50-60 is quite normal I'd say.

Why can't we finally all switch to metric?!

mytdaveApr 19, 08:40 AMToo bad Apple couldn't just ask Samsung to behave themselves... Maybe they did?

I don't know about you, but it's pretty obvious to me that the Samsung devices pictured here are a clear and blatant rip-off of Apple's designs and interface. At least other Android devices had some differentiating elements. Not so here. Even a monkey could see Samsung stealing Apple's bananas in this case.

WarbrainApr 20, 12:37 PM1984 is not happening because companies and the government spies on you but because of people that are saying: "So what? It's not a big issue."

It'd be happening even if people were pissed off about CCTV and the like.

SuperdriveSep 26, 12:13 PMAfter the ROKR and SLVR, is anyone really surprised that Cingular will help launch this phone?

I'm still waiting for this to hit the market. My SLVR is great, and as long as Apple does NOT make a slider, I will buy an iPhone right away.

2007 is going to be spendy. I'll have to buy "iTV", Leopard, "iPhone", and a new portable. AHHH
